UK music lovers searching for music to buy legitimately online that doesn't carry digital rights management (DRM) restrictions have a new service to use - eMusic offers a catalogue of 1.4 million tracks in the open and non-restricted MP3 format. The company's available catalogue features mainly independent label repertoire.

The company launched a UK version of its cross-platform service last week, and is offering users 25 free tracks just for signing-up and testing the service.

"Start downloading your free MP3s today and take two weeks to decide if you like eMusic. If you're not 100 per cent satisfied simply cancel before your trial period ends and there's absolutely no cost. Keep the 25 tracks as a gift just for checking out eMusic," the company said.

Because tracks are sold in MP3 format, they will work on iPods and any other MP3-supporting digital music player. It's a subscription-based service with a twist - it allows consumers to own, not rent their music.

Music fans who want to test the service out need to sign up and register, handing over credit card information. At the end of the trial period they can cancel their membership, or continue it by joining one of the service's three subscription packages:

eMusic Basic: 40 song downloads per month for £8.99 per month;
eMusic Plus: 65 song downloads per month for £11.99 per month;
eMusic Premium: 90 song downloads per month for £14.99 per month.

Downloads do not rollover from one period to the next.
