Apple faces a fresh challenge to the way it protects songs from unauthorised use and locks songs bought outside iTunes out of the iPod.

Consumer rights champion DVD Jon is a Norwegian hacker who broke the encryption on DVDs so they would play in Linux when he was just 15.

Now he has reverse-engineered Apple's FairPlay DRM system and is licensing the technology to companies that want their content to play on iPods.

A report describes a meeting between DVD Jon and Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Jon said little about what he was planning, but Jobs warned that while Apple was not a litigious company, other technology firms may be.
