Tue, 31 Aug 2004 Apple Expo: New flat-screen iMac G5 revealed
Apple has announced a vastly redesigned G5 iMac range.
Speaking in Paris, Apple VP worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller revealed Apple has sold 7.5 million iMacs in the past four years, and introduced the new design. "It's the world's thinnest desktop", he said. "It's just two-inches thick.

The new product integrates the entire computer right into the flat-panel display - it looks like a white Cinema Display, and is available in both 17- and 20-inch configurations with G5 processors running as fast as 1.8GHz. The machine stands on an aluminium foot.
“Just like the iPod redefined portable digital-music players, the new iMac G5 redefines what users expect from a consumer desktop,” said Schiller.
“With the entire system, including a gorgeous 17- or 20-inch display, just two inches thin, a lot of people will be wondering ‘where did the computer go?’ ”
Confirming expectations, the new iMac looks like a white 17-inch Cinema Display with a DVD slot-loader on the side and an aluminium foot with a grey Apple logo on the front.
Everything you want
The new iMac offers all its connectors on the right-hand side, including three USB 2.0, two USB, FireWire 400, Ethernet and audio in/out. It has both analogue and digital optical connectors, with AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth support available as buid-to-order options. It hosts built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet and a a 56K V.92 modem.
The 17-inch models come with either a 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 processor and a SuperDrive for burning professional-quality DVDs, or a 1.6GHz G5 processor and a Combo drive. The 20-inch model has a 1.8GHz G5 processor and SuperDrive.
The iMac's system architecture has been redesigned. It offers up to a 600MHz front-side bus, 400MHz DDR memory expandable to 2GB, AGP 8X graphics and 7200rpm Serial ATA drives up to 250GB. It ships with a high-performance NVidia graphics card and Mac OS X 10.3 Panther installed.
