HMV has slashed prices through its online music store to just 39p per track.

The aggressive move could spark a price war in the UK digital download market. The company also intends selling recorded live performances through its service.

The Scotsman also reveals plans by the company to offer video and game downloads in future.

HMV's adopted Windows Media format is incompatible with the market-leading iPod.
