Intel has challenged Apple to come up with a remote with fewer buttons.

The remark came during Intel VP Don MacDonald's keynote on the digital home, during the Intel Developer Conference on Tuesday.

MacDonald commented that on announcing the remote control that comes with Apple's Front Row software, Apple CEO Steve Jobs had criticised companies for making complicated remote controls with too many buttons. In response Intel is working on developing a 'button-less' remote control for use with its Viiv home media centre.

"We set the bar with no controls on a remote, we'd like to see someone else beat that," MacDonald joked.

This remote control will be voice activated, all the customer need do is speak into the voice receiver. However, when demoed on stage the device initially failed to work, no doubt due to the acoustics of the auditorium, as MacDonald suggested.
