FM transmitters seem set to be made legal in the UK just in time for Christmas.

After years of campaigning, UK regulator, Ofcom, has taken its most significant step yet to legalise the use and sale of FM transmitters for iPods in the UK.

The regulator today published draft regulations that will make use of these devices - which stream music from an iPod at a very low range using the FM frequency - legal in the UK.

Ofcom explains that it proposes to permit the use of these FM transmitters on a "licence-exempt basis".

The publication of the draft regulations is the climax of ten weeks of public consultation. Now the document has been published, the regulator will accept further responses for another four weeks.

Final changes will come into effect in December 2006.
