Apple updates deliver Apple TV and suggest UK movie support

Apple last night updated QuickTime and iTunes for Mac and Windows systems, with the latter software sporting new features for users in the UK.

Both updates are available from within iTunes or directly from Apple's website.

iTunes 7.1 (28MB) introduces additional support for the slightly delayed Apple TV, which now ships later this month. This support includes a new Preferences Tab option which causes iTunes to look for Apple TVs, the system is limited to supporting five Apple TV units only.

In a move that should drive expectation of the launch of iTunes TV and movie sales in the UK, a new Parental Ratings pane has appeared, offering localised support for UK movie ratings systems (PG, 12, 18 and so on). Until now, only the US category system has been supported.

The update also introduces full screen support for Cover Flow, allowing users to navigate through their digital collection using full screen representations of the covers.

Improved sorting options also debut in this release, allowing you more flexibility in sorting your music by artist, album and song title.

QuickTime 7.1.5 delivers numerous bug fixes and addresses "critical security issues", according to notes provided with the update.

These bugs all relate to situations in which maliciously crafted QuickTime movie, MIDI, PICT, 3GP or QTIF files could generate application crashes or the execution of arbitrary code.
