Toshiba wants designers to create concept designs for products that use its tiny 0.85-inch hard drive.

Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division's 'Hard Disk Drive Revolution' design competition is open now.

The concepts will be judged by a panel of executives from some of the world's leading IT and consumer brands, including leading design group Seymour Powell, based on their "real-world applications and marketability", the company said.

A winning designer from one each of Europe's design universities and design houses will have the opportunity to have their design considered for actual launch by one of Toshiba's manufacturing partners.

The 0.85-inch drive is around the size of a £1 coin, but can carry multiple gigabytes of data.

"By combining high performance hard disk technology in such a small form factor, we are giving designers the perfect medium for unleashing their creativity," explained Martin Larsson, general manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division.
