Avid Technology has acquired London-based company Sibelius Software in a $23 million deal.

Sibelius makes music notation software that is widely used by musicians for movies and songs, and by school children using computers to write, teach or learn music. The company claims 180,000 users in 100 countries.

The company's software has been used to create the score for many movies, including the recent Harry Potter and Narnia films. It is used by various musicians, including Bjork and Jamie Cullum.

Avid claims the deal will allow Sibelius to grow its business in the movie, music and education markets. Sibelius will become a business unit of Avid's DigiDesign arm. The software will in future be integrated across Avid's product range.

"Working together, Sibelius and Digidesign can deliver an even wider variety of integrated products that will give our customers a cutting edge advantage when creating or learning about music," said Digidesign general manager and Avid vice president Dave Lebolt.

Jeremy Silver, CEO of Sibelius, explained: "By combining our software with Digidesign and M-Audio products, we can provide valuable solutions that enhance music learning by putting the industry's best music production tools in the hands of educators, students and children. Our customers will reap the benefits of this acquisition as we work to bring new and innovative products to market in the future."
