Adobe co-founder John Warnock has been recognised for creating the PDF format and other contributions to the advancement of information systems.

On accepting the British Computer Society's Ada Lovelace Medal, Warnock explained how Adobe created printer-independent fonts, reports The Magazine Design Weblog.

According to Warnock: "It was so bloody simple that Adobe was unable to patent the solution."

Despite this, Microsoft has never mounted a successful challenge to PDF. Warnock said that this is because "they just didn't get it". He added: "They didn't get the subtlety of publishing and the importance of how things look and not just the content of the ASCII text."
