Black Friday 2016: What is Black Friday?

So-called because of its US origins, the day after Thanksgiving is referred to as Black Friday and it is the biggest day for shopping as extravagant discounts are applied to thousands of products across various retailers.

It's named Black Friday because it's the day when stores go from the red (debit) into the black (credit). While Thanksgiving and therefore Black Friday are primarily a US-based holiday, thanks to the internet and online shopping, UK companies have joined in the fun in a bid to make more sales.

Black Friday 2016: When is Black Friday?

This year, Black Friday falls on 25 November, but expect deals to begin at the very beginning of November and ramp up before the big day.

Black Friday 2016: What is Cyber Monday?

A new trend that has appeared in recent years is Cyber Monday, which is usually the first Monday in December (it'll actually be 28 November this year!) and is also the Monday after Black Friday. It's believed to be the busiest day of the year for online shopping, presumably because everyone's recently been paid and realises that they've only got a few weeks left to do their Christmas shopping.

Some retailers launch new promotions on Cyber Monday, so we'll bring you those deals here.

Did Apple do a Black Friday sale in 2015?

In 2014, we expected Apple to sell its products at a reduced price on Black Friday as it had in the past. However, Apple decided that it didn't need to offer any incentives to get people to shop on the 28 November 2014 so the UK missed out on savings direct from the company. This continued into 2015, unfortunately, with the company itself not discounting its products, even if other retailers did.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013 in the UK on Black Friday, Apple offered savings of up to £80 on Macs, £50 on iPads and £25 on iPods, so it did come as a surprise that it didn't offer any sort of Black Friday incentive for UK customers last year.

Apple did offer a Black Friday event for its US customers on 28 November 2014. Apple ditched discounts in favour of reduced gift cards or the offer of a free gift card (worth up to $75) when you purchase an Apple product.
