Despite Apple's best attempts to encourage developers and publishers to support the OS X platform, it's still something of an uphill struggle for the Mac-based gamer, with most resorting to Boot Camp in order to run the (generally cheaper) Windows version of titles.

The Mac App Store has helped a great deal, however, lowering distribution overheads by allowing publishers to release titles onto Apple's platform directly and digitally. The ease of installation and updating also makes those who have graduated to OS X from iOS feel comfortable with a familiar system.

The latest publisher to bring its titles to the Mac via the App Store is retro specialist DotEmu, who has just released its Irem Arcade Hits collection for £6.99. Featuring 18 games, the collection covers a wide batch of titles from the 80s and 90s.

On offer to retro fetishists are Air Duel, Battle Chopper, Blade Master, Cosmic Cop, Dragon Breed, Gunforce, Gunforce2, Hammerin' Harry, Image Fight, In the Hunt, Kung-Fu Master, Legend of Hero Tonma, Mystic Riders, Ninja Spirit, R-Type Leo, Superior Soldiers, Undercover Cops and Vigilante.
