French police have dumped Apple's Safari and Mail applications in favour of Firefox and Thunderbird.

France's police force, the gendarmerie, has been using Macs in some parts of the organisation for some time, a report claims.

The decision to dump Apple's software in favour of the Mozilla offering was caused by compatibility problems with the gendarmerie's own intranet, and the need for high-level email security.

The decision was also forced by a French initiative to move toward open source and Linux, and to dump software from the likes of Microsoft.
