Parallels has announced Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac, the latest edition of the software that lets users run Windows beside Mac OS X on an Intel Mac.

The new version offers support for 3D gaming and introduces the new SmartSelect feature. This lets users open any file (Windows or Mac OS X) using an application from either OS.

This feature works with the Coherence ability of Parallels which lets users open Windows applications while within Mac OS X.

Windows gamers also gain a fillip with the addition of support for 3D graphics cards, lending support for OpenGL and DirectX graphics software. This lets users run Windows games from inside Parallels without having to reboot the machine.

An additional feature, Snapshots, lets users save the state of their virtual machine, for those occassions when the Windows installation gets a virus.

The company has also bundled a six-month trial of virus and spyware protection.

The software is expected to ship in the next few weeks, following final testing.
