Apple's claim that the iTunes Music Store in the UK, France and Germany offers over 700,000 songs in each country has been brought into question.

According to The Independent's Charles Arthur each of the three European sites can only boast "about 300,000 each, with some overlap."

While this is more than the 200,000 tracks the iTunes Music Store was able to claim when it launched in the US just over a year ago, it is half the number Apple is claiming.

When asked for comment Apple stated that: "The iTunes Music Stores in the UK, France and Germany all feature over 700,000 songs from all five major music companies with dozens of independent record labels, available right from day one. "
