America Online (AOL) will carry RealNetwork's RealSystem 8 software on its network, giving AOL subscribers and other Internet users access to RealNetworks' latest video- and audio-streaming technology, the companies announced yesterday.

Under the deal, RealSystem 8 will let AOL work with content providers to enhance interactive capabilities for users on the Internet, the two companies said.

The companies also said the next version of AOL's software, AOL 6, will deliver a multiplatform-media player using RealPlayer streaming-media technology. RealPlayer will be distributed with the Netscape browser and through Netcenter.

Additionally, RealNetworks will distribute Spinner, the free Web-radio player based on RealPlayer technology, as well as bundle software with RealPlayer that enables users to easily sign up for AOL's service.
