Apple announced its purchase of DVD authoring software and technologies from Astarte, award-winning developer of DVD authoring tools at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show.

Astarte’s engineering team will be relocated to Apple’s Cupertino headquarters as part of the deal.

Astarte, original developer of the Toast CD-R authoring package, has developed a series of DVD authoring titles over the last few years. As reported by Insanely Great Mac, Apple has acquired DVDirector, DVDelight, DVDExport, Mpack and Apack from the company. This series of titles is mainly devoted to DVD editing, though at different levels of functionality. Mpack converts media into MPEG-2 audio, Apack is an audio package featuring a Dolby-certified AC-3 audio encoder.
