Apple is asking users of Apple Remote Desktop 2 to update to Apple Remote Desktop 2.2, the latest update to its asset management, software distribution and help desk support software.

The new client (7MB) and admin (29.5MB) versions improve "reliability and compatibility," says Apple , as well as enhancements that enable users to copy files to symlinked directories; install from .mpkg files; install iTunes 4.7; type in Japanese; and other improvements.

The new update also offers compatibility with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

Apple Remote Desktop is a desktop management solution that allows an administrator to distribute software, remotely control and configure systems, offer real-time online help to end users, and create detailed software and hardware reports on a number of Mac OS X computers - from anywhere on the network or remotely across the Internet. A ten client version of Remote Desktop costs £199. An unlimited version is £349. The latest update is free to owners of version 2.
