Apple may already have found a replacement for outgoing Mac hardware chief, Tim Bucher.

A report on MacCity claims that Umax founder Peter Mehring is set to take the role. Mehring works as Umax' general manager and vice president of research and development at the company. He last worked as senior vice president of engineering at Echelon, a company founded by Mike Markkula.

The report cites a letter from Mehring as proof of the move. As part of his employment at Umax Mehring developed the company's licensed Mac OS clones.

He has also worked at Radius, Power Computing, Sun, and Wang Laboratories.
