The rumours are true. Apple is indeed set to hold a special press event in San Francisco and London on Tuesday 12 September.

An invitation has now been received by the press, including Macworld. The text of the email reads “It’s Showtime”.

The event coincides with the first day of Apple Expo in Paris, however, despite the fact that the Mac community will be converging on Paris, Apple will not be hosting an event for the media at that location.

Reports suggest that Apple may launch new iPods as the company is likely to offer a new generation of iPods in the run up to Christmas. It is also possible that the company will take the wraps off an upgraded Mac mini and iMac – featuring Intel's new Core 2 Duo chips.

Apple may also launch the long-rumoured iTunes Movie Store, likely to be US-only at launch.

The US-focused nature of an iTunes movie launch may explain why Apple chose not to showcase the new product at Apple Expo Paris.
