Apple Asia's purchase and original equipment manufacturing (OEM) office is to open a representative bureau in Shanghai.

Apple set up its Asia purchase and OEM office in Taiwan in 1994. However, Apple's contract manufacturers – including Quanta, Compal and Inventec – have had plants built in Shanghai this year, so Apple plans to establish another purchasing office in Shanghai to move nearer to its production source.

According to reports in Asia Business Tech, Apple is one of the four biggest foreign buyers of electronics components in Taiwan.

The other three include Hewlett-Packard, Dell and IBM.

Collectively, all four companies purchase up to $30 billion in components a year in Taiwan.

Apple has intensified its purchase of components in Taiwan since last year to lower manufacturing costs and increase global competitiveness.

Apple purchased around US$3 billion in components in Taiwan, with the figure set to rise this year.
