Song redemptions through the Apple/Pepsi song giveaway fell short of expectations, Apple told CNet last night.

Though the promotion could have yielded 100 million song downloads just 5 million songs were downloaded, according to Apple vice president worldwide corporate communications, Katie Cotton.

"We had hoped the redemptions would have been higher," she said.

She also revealed that promotional bottles were late in reaching some key markets – adding that the deal had served to introduce a lot of people to iTunes. The 5 million songs were included in the 70 million song sales announced by Apple yesterday.

As a result of distribution problems, the offer has been extended beyond its original end of March date until April 30.
