Apple has launched remote desktop management software for Mac OS X: Apple Remote Desktop.

The software allows teachers and administrators to monitor up to 250 screens on a network, perform group demonstrations, distribute software upgrades, and offer help to individuals with real-time screen sharing and text chat.

Apple Remote Desktop comes in two versions: the 10-client edition (priced at US$299) manages up to 10 Macs. An unlimited-client edition (costing $499) is capable of managing up to 5,000 Macs in a single location.

The software runs on Mac OS 8.1 through Mac OS 9.2, or Mac OS X v10.1 or later. Details of the software are not yet available on the UK Apple store.
