Handel's Messiah may be inappropriate for young children, according to the iTunes Music Store.

Classical music buffs visiting the store this week were surprised to see that Apple had given Handel's Messiah an 'explicit' warning – indicating the album may be inappropriate for children or others with sensitive tastes.

Apple PR manager Lara Vacante told the Mercury News: "Obviously, there's been some sort of error. Technicians have been looking into why it was mislabelled". The adult's only warning on the classical masterpiece was removed within 24 hours.

The version of Handel's Messiah available through Apple's service was recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It's a popular work which touches on love, violence and death.

Apple's service continues to extend its offering, deepening its connections with the independent music labels. Most recently, the company introduced a more easy to navigate classical music page that breaks the genre down by periods and date.
