Apple has updated the Mac mini, defying speculation the entry-level affordable Mac was about to be axed.

The new models ship with either a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo or 2.0GHz Core Duo processor. Two models are available, with prices starting at £399.

The 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo model hosts an 80GB hard drive and 1GB of memory. It costs £399, the same price as the equivalent previous model.

The 2.0GHz Core Duo offers a more capacious 120GB drive, boasts 1GB of memory and costs £499, £30 cheaper than its previous iteration.

Apple also claims the new Mac mini is "up to 33 per cent" faster than the previous generation.

The new Mac mini ships with iLife '08.
