As Apple's move to consolidate its position in the science and research markets gathers pace, the company is developing software for parallel and distributed computing.

The company has already launched a mailing list for the software, dubbed Xgrid, which Apple described as "Apple's solution for parallel and distributed high-performance computing."

ThinkSecret says that Apple filed a trademark in the US in October 2002. The patent describes the release as "computer hardware and software".

Apple introduced new Xserve configurations on February 10 2003. These included the long-awaited Xserve RAID system.
