Asustek Computer has taken Apple's order for iBook manufacture from existing maker, Quanta Computer.

A report in the local Economic Daily News says that Asustek has been contracted to make 14.1-inch iBooks, "with shipments to total about 500,000 notebooks".

The firm produced Apple's 12.1-inch iBooks and PowerBooks, and took an order for a 15.4-inch iBook set to launch in 2006, according to the report.

It is not clear if the latter product will run on a PowerPC processor, or if the 15.4-inch product will be one of the first to run on a processor from Intel.

Apple has confirmed it will migrate its consumer Macs to Intel chips beginning in June 2006.

Quanta manufactures much of Apple's PowerBooks, and also makes the iMac for Apple.
