The BBC continues to explore new possibilities in the emerging digital landscape, with news now of its intent to make professional performances of Beethoven's entire nine symphonies available as free MP3s.

Three of these recordings will only be available for download until 5.30pm today. Others are being perfromed and will be made available on a weekly basis. The symphonies were performed by the Manchester Philharmonic.

Embracing the future

The BBC is also involved in the Creative Archive initiative, with Channel 4, the British Library, the British Film Institute and other national and international bodies. The Creative Archive initiative allows people to download clips for non-commercial use, to retain, or manipulate and share.

The BBC is also embracing Podcasting, with several of its programmes available in this way. These include Radio Five Live; Fighting Talk and In Our TIme.
