BT Cellnet has announced a new breed of mass market mobile Internet phones, the pre-paid Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) phone.

The pay-as-you-go phone is based on the Mitsubishi Trium Geo handset (right).

Available direct from BT Cellnet, Genie Internet and high-street stores, the phone is £99.99, and can access email, news, and other WAP services from Genie Internet, a UK mobile Internet service provider.

BT Cellnet has also restructured its calling charges, offering Mobile Internet and voice-only billed and pre-pay calling plans. Available plans are the Net 100, 200 and 400 Mobile pay and go tariffs, costing £20, £30 and £50 per month respectively, plus a £10 per three days service charge. Each package includes free call time for some calls – the 100 gives 100 minutes, and the 400 gives 400 minutes.
