The Cube's final resting-place will be in New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Apple's decommissioned eight-inch Cube has been acquired for the museum's design collection, reports the New York Times.

The Museum of Modern Art owns other Apple memorabilia, including the 1984 Macintosh and a Macintosh SE from 1987.

Apple officially scrapped the Cube on July 4 after poor sales. A total of 32 per cent of Macworld readers agreed that the Cube was "too expensive" in a poll conducted after the Cube was decommissioned.

However, during its short life, the Cube was the recipient of numerous awards from the IT industry, including those from Business Week, D&AD and Industrie Forum Design.
