Macromedia today announced Director MX, its upgraded multimedia-authoring tool.

The program creates content and applications for CD/DVD-ROM, kiosks, and the Web.

The upgrade from Director 8 outputs content in ShockWave format, introduces better Flash and Fireworks integration, and adds accessibility features developed to meet new US standards.

Support for QuickTime 6.0 and its features - including MPEG 4 - are introduced in this version. Director MX supports interactive 2D and 3D animation, RealVideo, RealAudio, MP3, QuickTime, Flash MX, text fonts and Web-ready images.

FireWorks MX integration means Director will launch that application when required, import FireWorks MX files directly into itself, and exploit Fireworks to optimize graphics quickly.

Director MX addresses accessibility issues, adding text-to-speech, captioning and Tab-navigation features to Shockwave content.

Director MX costs £899; upgrades from Director 8.5 cost £299. Director MX is scheduled to ship in December. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.1.
