Of 46 million adults in the UK, 27 per cent have used the Internet in the past month, of which 44 per cent log-on every day, a new study reveals.

A total of 38 per cent of daily users are women, and 11 per cent are more than 50 years old, according to a study by CommerceNet and Nielsen Media Research.

The study is based on 4,700 survey responses and also found that 72 per cent of Internet users log-on for work-related activities, while 69 per cent use it to research travel destinations.

The Internet is used by 60 per cent of repondents to check sports and entertainment news, and 40 per cent use it to access information about their local community.
