FileMaker has released a trial version of FileMaker 5.5, the latest update to its database-management solution.

The trial version is available as a 12.1MB download and is time-limited to 30 days. It is available for Mac OS X, and also for Mac operating systems from 8.1 to 9.1. A single licence for the full version costs £219.

FileMaker 5.5 has been built to integrate with Microsoft Office, and has the capacity to publish FileMaker Pro databases on the Internet. Data that it can handle includes contacts, video, images, and graphics. It can also operate on cross-platform networks.

Limitations of the trial version include a 50-record limit for records, and printed reports are watermarked "FileMaker Pro". Networking is also limited to TCP/IP networks. Other networking protocols are supported only in the shipping product.

Several functions are absent from the demo, including FileMaker Help, spell checker, graphics- and data-import filters, and documentation files. Also available for download is a demo of FileMaker Server – software designed to host data for workgroups.

Both demos are available in French, Italian, German and Swedish, as well as International English and can be downloaded from FileMaker's Web site.
