The Republic of Ireland yesterday saw the debut of its first ever digital music download service from local ISP Eircom.

Eircom is offering 250,000 tracks from 8,500 artists. The catalogue is being provided in partnership with UK digital music firm OD2. The latter company has been active in the UK market for some four years.

Reflecting an online music trend the service will also offer some downloadable tracks up to six weeks before they are made available at retail. Music lovers pay for tracks using a credit system – pay as you go, or on a monthly subscription basis.
