A Mac OS X DVD-R solution has been launched by Formac.

The Designer DVD-R/RW supports FireWire-equipped G3 and G4, iMacs PowerBooks and iBooks. The solution is a combination drive able to read-&-write DVDs and CDs. It ships with proprietary authoring software, using an MPEG encoder that converts iMovie files and QuickTime movies into the format required for DVDs.

A control feature adjusts the quality of video and audio output. The top video-bit rate is 9.8. More than six hours of video can be stored on a standard DVD-R disc.

DVD projects can be previewed with Apple's DVD player software before burning.

Oliver Bergmann, Formac CEO, said: " The Designer DVD-R/RW is part of our strategy to provide innovative solutions for the Mac, with the Mac being as the centre of the digital lifestyle."

The Designer DVD-R/RW costs $549. UK pricing is unavailable.
