iPod owners are promised a new Bluetooth-based accessory that will stream music using the 2.4GHz wavelength.

XtremeMac is expected to introduce the device next year, according to a report in ExtremeTech.

That site says the Bluetooth peripheral will stream music from any source to portable speakers, headphones, a home or car stereo.

"It sounds simple. Plug the transmitter into the source's headphone or line-out jack and the receiver into either a set of headphones or speakers or, with the right cable, into a home stereo or home theater. But sending audio wirelessly is not so easy."

The product uses a technology called RangeScan, a Bluetooth audio technology that supports audio transmission using the standard.
