The Mac rumour engine has moved up a gear once again, with multiple published claims multiple that Apple plans a major press event on 12 September.

While Macworld cannot confirm the flurry of rumours, the industry is headed into the traditionally frenetic Christmas shopping period, and the speculated event takes place on the Tuesday of Europe's biggest Mac event, Apple Expo, which begins that day in Paris. No Paris keynote is scheduled to take place this year.

While it's hard to accurately predict what Apple plans to reveal during the event, recent speculation favours the launch of new iPods, some even claim Apple will at last launch a movie download or rental service through iTunes.

BusinessWeek reports the latter plans, claiming that movies will cost $14.99 for new releases and $9.99 for older films.
