Apple CEO Steve Jobs repeated his promise that Power Mac G5 speeds would reach 3GHz "by next summer" at Apple Expo today.

The Power Mac G5 uses IBM's PowerPC 970 processor – a stripped-down version of the powerful POWER4 chip that IBM uses in its high-end server products

Jobs failed to commit to a firm shipment date for Apple's forthcoming operating system, Mac OS X 10.3 (aka Panther), but repeated his promise that the product would indeed ship by the end of the year.

Europe's Mac congregation was disappointed in any remaining hopes of iPhoto functionality or iTunes Music Store for Europe announcements at the show. No date for either offering has been announced.

Jobs said that Apple's iChat AV software has been downloaded 500,000 times to date.
