Eastman Kodak yesterday filed suit against Sony for alleged violation of ten patents related to digital cameras.

Kodak and Sony are the two leading companies in the digital camera market. IDC figures reported by FT.com show Sony as the leading manufacturer in the market last year, with Kodak at number two.

Kodak said it has been trying to resolve the patent problems with Sony for three years. The company holds a host of digital camera-related patents – "over 1,000", the report says.

IDC analyst Ron Glaz said: "If Kodak can get Sony to jump on the licensing bandwagon, it could get the rest of the vendors to play along."

Kodak sued Sanyo in 2001, and that case was resolved with Sanyo's decision to license Kodak patents. Sony says it will "vigorously defend" itself.
