LaCie is to ship an alternative DVD-authoring solution for Macs called CaptyDVD.

CaptyDVD supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and QuickTime movies as video sources. The software is OS X and OS 9.x compatible, and supports both NTSC and PAL.

In the US the company will ship CaptyDVD with its d2 FireWire DVD-Rewritable Drive for a complete DVD authoring and burning solution. It will cost $379. The software will also be sold separately through authorized resellers for $149. LaCie UK were unable to confirm its plans for the product.

The software allows for the addition of title menus, thumbnails and backgrounds to DVD p[projects. Users can also combine video and still-image slide shows on a single disc. Like iDVD, the solution ships with a collection of templates and themes to speed up DVD authoring.

CaptyDVD offers chapter marking, and can display marked scenes as thumbnails. It is also capable of burning Video CD discs, and can create Toast-compatible DVD images.

LaCie product manager Salem Tirane said: "We are delivering to Mac users a perfect, intermediate solution for external drives that falls between DVD encoder software and an extensive but expensive authoring solution."
