LaCie has announced a DVD-RAM drive fitted with the FireWire (IEEE 1394) interface.

The DVD-RAM52i is hotswappable with automatic configuration when connected, and it can also be daisy-chained with other devices.

Each DVD-RAM cartridge has a capacity of 5.2GB - up to eight times larger than a CD. This, according to LaCie, makes it the lowest cost storage per MB.

The drive reads CDs and DVD-ROM. DVD-RAM is also readable.

The LaCie FireWire DVD-RAM will ship in March, priced at £479 alongside a £469 SCSI version. Cartridges cost £15 for a 2.6GB single-sided disc, and £24 for a 5.2GB double-sided disc.
