Adobe has released a public beta of Acrobat Reader for Palm OS.

Although Windows-only at present, Adobe promises a Mac version of the beta will follow "at a later date".

Acrobat Reader for Palm OS lets Macintosh users view PDF documents on Palm OS handhelds. It complements Adobe's recently released Acrobat 5.0, and will present text and images that appear as intended in a platform-independent format.

Joe Eschbach, vice president of Adobe's ePaper Solutions Group, said: “Customers have expressed an overwhelming interest in reading PDF files on mobile computing devices such as Palm handhelds.

“This fits our vision for the future of network publishing, where people will have universal access to information."
