Apple's Mac mini has inspired a collective of open source developers to team up to launch the Mac Media Center project.

The developers hope to develop a free Media Center application for Mac OS X: "Bringing together the power and intuitiveness of the Macs' built-in applications under a simple interface, for use as part of a Home Theatre system," the developers said.

The developers are currently assigning tasks to volunteers, polling to decide the name and agreeing the user interface they hope to apply in this release.

They are also assembling a comprehensive list of 5:1 audio interfaces for the platform, which currently consists of devices from Griffin technology and M-Audio.

Mac Media Center project also offers a lively forum for developers.
