Maxtor has announced the DiamondMax 80, an 80GB hard-drive.

The drive, which will ship in August, runs of four-platters, each with 20GB of storage. The makers claim the drive can transfer data at up to 100MB per second, and has a drive speed of 5400 revolutions per minute (RPM).

Maxtor claims the 80GB capacity is a world record for hard drives.

Maxtor has also announced the DiamondMax VL 40, a 40GB drive with a 2MB buffer and a 5400RPM drive speed.
