Maxtor has announced a 40GB external hard-drive featuring the emerging USB 2.0 interface.

The 5,400rpm drive, called the 3000LE costs $199.95 in the US. It's compatible with Macs and PCs, though Apple hasn't added USB 2.0 support to its computers at this time. Adaptec is offering a USB 2.0 PCI interface, and other products that add USB 2.0 support are emerging on the market.

USB 2.0 is backward-compatible and runs at 480 megabits per second - 40 times faster than its predecessor, USB 1.1.
