Microsoft's Windows Media Player 7 for Mac is available for download now.

It allows Macs to access movies and music encoded in the Windows Media Format. The player offers a new interface, and supports built-in skins that change the desktop appearance of the player. It offers local and streamed playback of Windows Media and MP3 files and also supports .asf, .wma, .wmv, .asx, .wmx, .wax, .wm, and .wvx image and sound formats.

It can read the latest Windows Media codecs, including Windows Media Audio and Video 8. MacCentral reports that online film content providers intend releasing thousands of hours of movie content using these new codecs.

Microsoft claims the codecs will support high-quality digital-video streams at low bandwidths. The Player is compatible with Netscape Navigator, Communicator and Internet Explorer browsers.
