More than 4,800 students close to Microsoft's Redmond headquarters are eligible to receive discounted Apple iBook and MacBook computers. The deal includes all 7th-12th grade students enrolled in Shoreline public secondary schools, a short 30-minute commute from the Microsoft HQ.

The program is possible because Shoreline residents passed a bond measure enabling the school district to purchase and support the laptops. Parents can opt out of the programme, but very few reportedly have.
