Motorola is the number two phone manufacturer, second to Nokia. According to IDC, it increased shipments by 1.1 per cent to 75.4 million handsets in 2003, and its market share declined slightly to 14.1 per cent. The firm is making a big push in 2004, IDC says, having launched 20 new models in the third quarter of last year.

Mobile phone sales increased steadily in 2003 with the biggest growth spurt occurring in the last quarter.

IDC analyst David Linsalata told NewsFactor: "Growth is happening worldwide. In 2003, we saw the sales of over a half billion phones."
