News is emerging that Motorola is to close its Scottish mobile-phone manufacturing plant in Bathgate, West Lothian, with the loss of 3,100 jobs.
In a statement, Motorola said: "This potentially affects all the employees at the site, though no final decision has yet been made. No other Motorola facilities are affected by this proposal."
The decision follows weeks of negotiation – and the intervention of Prime Minister Tony Blair – in a bid to prevent the closure.
Motorola's decision follows the return earlier this month of its first quarter-year loss in 15 years. The company has also implemented cutbacks across its global operations.
