Creative Technology believes music player sales will climb 40 per cent this year.

The company claims combined sales in the sector will reach 35 million this year, compared to 25 million in 2004.

Reuters reports that Creative's product marketing manager Tommy Tsai said: "This market is booming rapidly and one of the reasons why MP3s are so popular is that they are becoming cheaper."

Samsung and Creative together hold a third of the global market share in flash-based music players - a sector Apple entered last week with the launch of its new iPod shuffle.
